DePuy Hip Replacement

The Bell Legal Group in Georgetown, South Carolina is currently investigating the health risks associated with the FDA Class I recall of DePuy Orthopaedic's ASR™ Hip System. DePuy's ASR™ Hip System is used as a hip implant in hip replacement surgeries. The hip replacement was designed to last up to 25 years. It is now known that around 12% of the patients (1 out of every 8) that received these hip replacements experienced failures within the first five years.

The FDA's October 13, 2010 report mentions component loosening, component malalignment, infection, pain, fracture, dislocation and metal sensitivity as reasons behind the recall.

The following products are affected by this recall:

  • ASR™ XL Acetabular System
  • DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System

It may be necessary for patients that have received hip replacement surgeries using one of these two products to undergo testing to ensure that there are no malfunctions occurring with the product. It may also be necessary to have an additional surgery performed to rectify the problem. Class I recalls are the most serious serous type of recall, and involve situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

One of the problems associated with the recalled DePuy hip replacement systems is that friction induced by the ball and socket components rubbing against each other over time can cause metal particls to wear off. Some recipients of the hip replacement implant react to these metal particles by building up fluid in the joint and muscles around the joint, which can cause damage to bone, nerves, and muscles around the joint.

Some of the patients that received DePuy's hip replacement systems have been notified by their physician. If you have received notice from you physician that you have been implanted with one of DePuy's recalled hip replacement systems, or believe that you were the recipient of one of DePuy's recalled hip replacement systems during a surgical procedure or hospital stay since 2003, please contact the Bell Legal Group to discuss your rights.
